Home Communication Books

Rationale:

At my school, home communication is required twice a month. Nobody seems to be very good at making that happen.

This year, I decided I would try more frequent, less detailed notes. I decided I'd try to write a sentence or two for most sessions with my students. Once the session is over, I jot a note in their book and I'm ready to see my next student. Several parents write back and it has been a great tool for building rapport.

I only have a 12 student caseload, so my notebooks are kind of fancy. But the idea is easily modified for bulk production!

Materials:

  • the cheapest notebooks I could find

  • covers designed to be the same size as the notebook

  • I have a spiral binding machine, but that is just over the top really

  • laminator and laminate

Instructions:

  • Print and cut your covers

  • laminate if desired

  • attach to notebook cover (I actually unbound, removed the cover, and rebound with my cover), but my colleague simply cut her covers and taped them to the existing covers, and it's working fine for her! :)
