Rationale:
We had a massive initiative to focus on core vocabulary. We have so many students who communicate with pictures, and we were just beginning to realize the importance of core vocabulary. Simultaneously, we were increasing our students' exposure to group activities and implementing our monthly themes.
We needed an interactive material to keep the students engaged (corresponding actions), that related to the theme, and was embedded with functional targets (vocabulary). These books and matching vocabulary boards allow the instructor to repeatedly model use of core vocabulary, because as the pages turn, the core icons remain visible.
I made a few of these books, and then I had an intern make more, and then it took off and many, many books were made.
This was also the first project where I utilized the slide master view in Powerpoint. Get your slide master view open, and modify a slide template. Clear, and insert the colors you want. Add insert picture fields, and insert text fields to create your layout. Go back to the normal view and select your layout from the dropdown.
Materials:
Powerpoint template with customized slide masters (click that link above): You'll want to create a back cover slide template for all of your vocabulary. Fringe vocabulary in the inside, and core along the bottom and right borders. You'll also need a slide template for the book pages. You will need to insert a box the size that your page should be, so that you can cut it out later. Everything you put in your template should be within that box so it doesn't get cut off.
Cover page
Paper/cardstock for printing your project
Laminator and laminate (if you want)
binding: bind your pages to the top of the binding and it should all fit together beautifully
*Print extras of your back cover and you've got individual communication boards!
