Rationale:
I wanted to make something to assist a student who has a lot of verbal vocabulary for items, but who communicates only across the function of requesting.
The idea is to give the student models of simple non-requesting language accompanied by visuals. I also wanted to provide a clarification method due to poor articulation. That was my rationale for a communication aid.
This student is very very active. I could not picture the student carrying anything consistently. That was my rationale to make it pocket-sized and durable.
Materials:
Extra badge holders my school had
Poly plastic (I used old PECS pages, but you can really use anything for this)
Symbolstix Icons (but of course you can use any symbol system)
Metal Rings
October 2014 Update:
This book is still in great shape! I've updated some icons over time, and enlarged the icons for easier pointing precision, but the wallet was easily tolerated in pants pockets, and the student is able to echo simple phrases using the book. We've found that it has fostered increasing independence for non-requesting language in routine contexts.
